Steven Gerrard plotting big Aston Villa transfer with regular starter at risk in surprise shake-up

Aston Villa are reportedly ready to make an upgrade at centre-back with a report revealing Tyrone Mings would be the one to make way.

Mings has played a vital role in the Aston Villa side during his time at the club. The 29-year-old was an important cog in the second half of Villa’s promotion from the Championship in the 2018/19 season.

He was on loan at the club in the second tier. However, the big part he played led to Villa signing the centre-back for around £20million.

Mings has continued to play a big role at Villa Park in the Premier League. He has played 100 games for Villa in all competitions since signing permanently.

Mings was Jack Grealish’s vice captain last season and took the armband following the star’s big-money move to Manchester City in the summer.

He has also established himself within the England set up in recent years. Mings has played 17 times for the national side, scoring twice.

Clearly, his time at Villa has led to success in multiple facets. However, his place in the side could be under threat, as per a report from Football Insider.

The report states that Steven Gerrard is keen on improving in multiple areas of the side. One position that he is apparently keen on upgrading is the left-sided centre-back,where Mings plays.

The report does not name who the ‘star’ replacement could be. It does, though, state that Mings has not ‘completely convinced’ Gerrard since he has been at the club.

Persistent reports since January have put Villa in the mix to sign Liverpool’s Joe Gomez.

Mings Villa future in question

Mings’ future at Aston Villa is now in question, following the recent report. If a big-name signing comes in at his position, he may not be afforded the same opportunities he currently gets.

Mings has missed just one game since Gerrard has been at the helm.

Should a new signing come in, Gerrard is likely to give them an extended run in the side.

Given Mings has been a pillar of the Villa side for the past few seasons, it is unlikely he will roll over and accept a lesser role. What’s more, his Three Lions place heading into the Qatar World Cup would come under threat if he weren’t playing regularly at club level.

Indeed, the captain is likely to fight for his place in the side, and from now until the end of the season, will want to perform to a high standard.
