Striker to ‘reassess Chelsea future’ if Tuchel continues current snub

A report claims striker Timo Werner will take a long hard look at his future if he cannot get back into the Chelsea first team.

The 25-year-old is in his second season at Stamford Bridge after a big-money move from RB Leipzig last summer. The Blues forked out £47.5m for the Germany international who penned a five-year deal with the west Londoners. Much was expected of Werner after his exploits with Die Roten Bullen.

The Stuttgart-born ace bagged 95 goals from 159 appearances in all competitions. He netted 78 times from 127 Bundesliga outings but has struggled in the Premier League.

Capped 45 times by Germany, he has continued to find the net for his national side. The former Stuttgart has notched 19 times for Die Mannschaft, including three in September’s international break.

But, after being handed 29 top-flight starts for Chelsea during 2020-2021, he now seems down the pecking order. Thomas Tuchel has given him the nod just twice in the league this term, with three outings from the bench.

The arrival of Romelu Lukaku has not helped matters. The Belgium ace has played every minute of the five league games he has started, scoring three times.

Now in his second spell at the club, the ex-Manchester United ace seems to have made a seamless transition back to the Bridge. Werner will need to impress Tuchel in the limited opportunities he is given if he is to force his way back into favour.

The Telegraph are reporting that he will ‘reassess his Chelsea future’ is he is still on the bench midway through the campaign.

Tuchel confident of Werner progression

Despite not scoring the expected volume of goals during his maiden Blues season, Werner did find the net 12 times. He also assisted eight in the Premier League and two in the Champions League.

But back in May, he explained to The Telegraph that he understood why there has been criticism of his return.

“I think a lot of people’s expectations for me, outside the club but also inside the club, were very high because of my goalscoring record,” he said.

“I also assisted many goals last year in my old club, but I think the main reason why they brought me here in the club is to score and maybe at the end 12 goals and six goals in the Premier League, that’s not good enough.”

Werner has been linked with both Bayern Munich and Juventus. But, after the recent 3-0 triumph over Tottenham, Tuchel revealed that his two main strikers could work in tandem.

“Timo can play with Romelu, he did very well at Tottenham,” he said. “That gave us a clear impression of how dangerous these two can also be together.”
