Surprise deal all-but done as Tottenham accept bid to sell regular starter

Paris Saint-Germain are reported to have reached an agreement with Tottenham to bring Serge Aurier back to the club this summer.

Aurier has played for Tottenham since 2017, when he joined from the Ligue 1 giants. He initially had to battle Kieran Trippier for a starting role at right-back and now faces competition from Matt Doherty. After starting 31 Premier League games last season, this time around he has managed 25 in all competitions.

But with his deal due to expire in 12 months time, the right-back always looked likely to depart this summer. As per reports, Spurs have placed a €12m asking price for the 28-year-old. That is understood to have attracted attention from Real Madrid.

However, it is PSG who are set to pounce. They were first mentioned as suitors last month with Mauricio Pochettino reportedly keen on a reunion.

Now, according to Football Insider, a deal has been reached to take Aurier back to the Parc des Princes. They claim Spurs want to offload Aurier this summer as opposed to letting him leave on a free next year.

As such, the article cites a club insider who claims a fee has been agreed and the player’s return to France is almost done.

Despite being a regular at Tottenham, he has constantly faced question marks over his tackling and positioning. Indeed, the player was badly exposed by Leeds United last week as they targeted Spurs’ right flank as a vulnerable area.

His sale will likely mean the club target a new right-back. Norwich’s Max Aarons has been linked, though his asking price could put the manageless north Londoners off.

Aurier in PSG return hint

Ivory Coast international Aurier has never hidden from his desire to return to PSG. Having played at Lens and then Toulouse, it was PSG which Aurier said ‘made him as a man’.

Indeed, his affection towards the Ligue 1 giants has never been disguised.

Speaking back in December, he spoke of his fondness towards his former club and how he could never reject a return.

“When I say PSG is the club close to my heart, I don’t want journalists to say, ‘He can’t say that!’ But of course I will answer,” he said.

“It’s the club I’ve loved the most out of all the clubs I’ve played for.

“Paris is where I turned into a man, as a professional, where I discovered myself more. That’s where I enjoyed myself the most.

“When I was a youngster at Lens, Paris was the club of my heart. One day, it would be no problem at all to go back, with pleasure. I will never turn down an offer from Paris, that is absolutely certain.

“If ever it comes up, why not? If it doesn’t, I’m very happy where I am and things are going well for me.”
