Surprise exit talks underway over transfer which could leave Man Utd short

Borussia Dortmund are in talks with Manchester United over a surprise deal for right-back Diogo Dalot, claims a report.

Dalot has not been able to get the game time he would like after joining from Porto three years ago.

The 22-year-old was sent to AC Milan on loan last season and has made just 35 appearances for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did use Dalot in pre-season and he was on the bench in Sunday’s draw with Southampton, as well as the opening game against Leeds.

He has only made 13 Premier League starts during his time at Old Trafford though and it seems as though Solskjaer has given him the green light to depart.

Dalot, who cost £19m, has two years to run on the five-year deal he penned in 2018.

Dortmund want to get a deal done before the transfer window closes on August 31. And Sky Sports report that they are hoping to arrange a loan deal with an option to buy next summer.

AC Milan and Bayern Munich are also believed to be interested and United seem keen to cash in even though they have little cover at right-back.

Brandon Williams and Axel Tuanzebe have both left club on loan moves to Norwich City and Aston Villa respectively. That has left Dalot as the only senior player as cover at right-back. So any move for the Portuguese defender would leave Solskjaer short in the right-back area.

Rooney doubts Ronaldo will move to City

Meanwhile, former United striker Wayne Rooney doubts Cristiano Ronaldo would ruin his Old Trafford legacy and sign for Man City.

The 36-year-old has been offered to United’s rivals and is apparently keen to make the move to The Etihad.

The player’s agent has been working hard on a new club for Ronaldo with PSG stepping away from any potential deal.

When asked for his verdict on Ronaldo’s apparent desire to join City, Rooney said: “I don’t know what to make of it, to be honest.

“If you’re asking me if I think it’s possible then I have major doubts that it is a possibility.

“Cristiano has got a great legacy at United. I don’t think he’s going to move somewhere for financial reasons.

“I’d be unsure if that’s going to happen. I think there’s more chance of it being PSG if he is to leave Juventus.

“On the other hand, it’s football, it can happen, it has happened before. Big players and legends from Manchester United in terms of Peter Schmeichel went to City, Andy Cole went to City, Mark Hughes managed City.

“It has happened before but I think someone of Cristiano’s stature I can’t see it happening.”
