Tottenham warned of major risk of going for Conte, as ‘only option’ named
Antonio Conte’s habit of going through “messy” departures from his clubs could spell bad news for Tottenham, according to Antonio Cassano.
Spurs are reportedly looking at the Italian coach as a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who left in April. Ryan Mason has been in temporary charge since, but the north London club are after an experienced head to lead them forward. Although, they have suffered setbacks in recent weeks, with Julian Nagelsmann and Erik ten Hag securing their futures.
Nevertheless, Conte made waves earlier this week by leaving Inter after winning the Serie A title.
Tottenham have earmarked him as a firm target, but Real Madrid are also in the race. Indeed, Zinedine Zidane has stepped down from Los Blancos.
According to ex-Italy striker Cassano, though, Conte has a bad habit of ending up with sour relationships with his clubs.
“For me, Conte’s only option is Real Madrid,” Cassano told BoBoTV. “His time at Inter was positive with a good first year and with the Scudetto win in the second, playing in his way.
“Conte has always had problems after a few years at the clubs he has been at, and I wonder if there is something which always leads to a messy departure.
“It cannot be a coincidence that it always ends this way and that the clubs don’t satisfy him.”
However, the European managerial merry-go-round could yet get more complicated.
Mauricio Pochettino‘s future at Paris Saint-Germain is also uncertain, amid links with a return to Tottenham.
Should Spurs miss out on Conte but get Pochettino, Cassano backed Zidane to move to the French capital.
He said: “I don’t think he [Conte] could go to PSG because it is a team which does not have players for the style he wants to play, and they don’t have the same mentality as him.
“Zidane is perfect for PSG.”
Pochettino has two Tottenham demands
Meanwhile, reports claim that Pochettino has two demands for Tottenham if he is to return to north London.
The Argentine largely enjoyed his spell with Spurs, taking them close to the Premier League title and to the Champions League final.
This time round, though, he would want assurances over his future with a big contract.
