Transfer brakes slammed on as Liverpool muscle in on Germans for £2m wonderkid

Liverpool have reportedly made a last-ditch bid to snap up Ghana wonderkid Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, amid talks over a Bundesliga move.

The Reds have a long-standing reputation for developing youth talent, both homegrown and from abroad. Indeed, Liverpool-born Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones are shining examples in the current team. Rising starlets such as attacker Mateusz Musialowski are also generating significant interest.

However, new talents are emerging all the time and according to Goal, Issahaku is another who has caught the eye among Anfield scouts.

As a result, Reds chiefs have made a last-minute scramble to try and secure the 17-year-old’s signature.

In fact, the Liverpool approach has seen a deal with Bayer Leverkusen stall. The Bundesliga giants had almost reached an agreement, but the further interest has stopped their progress.

Furthermore, Borussia Dortmund and Swiss side Basel have interest.

Issahaku currently plays for Steadfast FC in the second tier of Ghanaian football, but he has already signed a sponsorship deal with kit manufacturer Nike.

He has enjoyed a stellar year so far and a big move to Europe would therefore raise his profile further.

The teenager began the year in Ghana’s Under-17s team, before earning a call-up to the Under-20s in February.

His rise has not slowed down, though, and he received a call-up to the senior team in March. Issahaku has not yet made his debut, but could do so in upcoming friendlies against Morocco and the Ivory Coast.

Steadfast reportedly rate their talented youngster at £2million and it remains unclear where his future lies.

Issahaku has transfer demand

At that price, Steadfast president Haruna Iddrisu has revealed that he has fielded a wide range of interest in the player.

He told Joy Sports (via Goal) recently: “We’ve had some offers from some major football clubs internationally. We are looking for some offers from Austria, Geneva, from Italy and from Qatar.

“We are weighing what gives him the best opportunity and the club, the best returns tomorrow.

“More importantly, he has the opportunity to play and contribute to Ghana achieving some soccer laurels in terms of bringing gold to Ghana.

“Issahaku Abdul Fatawu, our newest jewel, is the idol of Tamale, Steadfast FC and my personal jewel of football that I trust will bring us smiles, honour to himself and the country.”

The Premier League has enjoyed a host of Ghanaian talent, including Michael Essien, Thomas Partey and Jeffrey Schlupp.
