Tuchel admits how Aguero miss changed Chelsea chances; explains impact of ‘relentless’ Blues star

Thomas Tuchel did not avoid the fact that Sergio Aguero’s missed penalty was a turning point in Chelsea’s win over Manchester City.

Chelsea came away from the Etihad Stadium with a 2-1 win after a comeback in the second half. They could have found themselves 2-0 down just before the break but Aguero failed with an attempted Panenka penalty. Tuchel’s side punished the error in the second half with goals from Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso.

It continued Tuchel’s fine record against other elite managers and they deserved it on the basis of their performance after the interval.

But the German tactician admitted they would have had “no chance” of staging a comeback if Aguero had scored his penalty.

Tuchel told Sky Sports: “What a performance in the second half. We were more or less equals in the first half, in the last five minutes we almost gave it away completely. If they scored the penalty it was over before it started and we would have no chance to come back.

“But absolutely impressed by the reaction and performance in the second half. We deserved to win the second half.

“If you want to steal all three points at the Etihad you need a bit of luck, moments and decisions from the referee. But we had many half chances in the second half and so a big congratulations to the team for their performance.”

Tuchel happy with Werner

Chelsea could have won by a bigger margin if Timo Werner had timed his runs a bit better. The striker had two goals disallowed for being offside, but made amends by setting up the winner.

Tuchel maintained he was happy with his compatriot’s impact, telling BBC Sport: “In the last week he’s really adapted well to the situations.

“The way he works, he’s relentless. He really wants it and I am very happy with his performance today.”

It wasn’t the best day for Andreas Christensen, though. The defender had to go off in the first half with an injury.

Tuchel explained: “He was injured some weeks ago with the same injury. I hope that it’s not too bad and we get him back because he is so crucial.”
