USA striker close to Norwich switch as Farke aims to give Puuki some help

Norwich City have reportedly agreed a deal with Werder Bremen for striker Josh Sargent who will fly to England next week to complete the move.

The 21-year-old has spent his entire career with the German club after leaving his native USA to move to Europe in January 2018. He had already enjoyed a week training with Dutch club PSV Eindhoven and also trained with German outfit Schalke. But it was Werder who offered him a contract which he penned on his 18th birthday in February 2018.

Die Werderaner gave him plenty of game time despite his tender years. The Missouri-born hitman has made 81 first-team appearances, scoring 15 goals.

The USA international has played 70 times in the Bundesliga, finding the net on 13 occasions. He impressed with the Weserstadion outfit last term but could not prevent them from being relegated to Bundesliga 2.

And the youngster has already bagged twice from two outings in the second tier this term. However, barring any last-minute mishaps, he will not play for Werder Bremen again this season, according to Sky Sports.

Werder’s sporting director Frank Baumann revealed the situation regarding the forward.

“We are about to finalise a transfer with a foreign club,” he said. “Because of this, Josh told us that he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to play on Saturday. As a result, we let him go home from training.”

Sargent joins long list of new recruits

Canaries boss Daniel Farke will have to make do without the influential Emiliano Buendia in 2021-2022. The Argentine has moved to Aston Villa and may be joined at Villa Park by Todd Cantwell.

But the German has also been busy recruiting. He has secured five permanent signings, including winger Milot Rashica, defender Ben Gibson and left-back Dimitrios Giannoulis.

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has arrived on a season-long loan as the East Anglians attempt to stay in the Premier League. Teemu Pukki will lead the line, as he did when the Canaries suffered relegation after the 2019-20 campaign.

But it seems as though the Finland international will have some company up front. Norwich will pay around £8m for Sargent and it could prove to be money well spent if he fulfils his potential.

The starlet has already scored five goals for America’s senior side from 16 appearances. He will undergo a medical on Monday ahead of inking his deal.
