Victor Orta steps into gear as Leeds midfield target sees price plummet

Leeds United are reportedly ready to make a firm approach to sign John Swift in January amid claims that his price tag has dramatically tumbled.

Swift has been an influential figure for Reading already this campaign. With eight goals and nine assists to his name in 21 appearances, it’s easy to see why he’s a man in demand. As such, it’s little surprise to see the talisman attracting a huge amount of interest from teams both in the Premier League and the Championship.

And with the 26-year-old out of contract at the end of the season, a number of clubs are sensing an opportunity. Indeed, as per theSheffield Star, Burnley, Wolves and Sheffield United are all considering moves.

However, it is Leeds who are reportedly leading the chase, with reports claiming a tempting offer could be put before the Royals.

At the time, it’s understood that Reading value Swift in the £7m bracket – a fee which would not deter Leeds.

However, as per Football Insider, the fee on the midfielder’s head has now plummeted ahead of the January window. That’s after Swift reportedly rejected Reading’s final contract offer and made it clear he intends to leave.

And with the Royals not wanting to lose their prized asset on a free, they will instead look to cash in when the window opens.

As such, that will be music to the ears of Leeds, who desperately need reinforcements.

Leeds looking to John Swift

Indeed, Leeds reportedly want to sign two midfielders in January. They have a No 6 – to cover Kalvin Phillips – and a No 8 on their radar.

Swift falls into the latter category and news of his price drop will likely see Victor Orta spring into action.

The former Chelsea academy man is capable of playing as either a central midfielder or in the playmaker role.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has already made clear his admiration for Swift.

Speaking in February 2020 to LeedsLive, Bielsa said: “Swift is a great player.

“I value him a lot. He is a player who appears suddenly in attack and the same in transition between defence and attack. But he’s especially good when he passes from the defence to the attack.”

Swift agent fuels transfer rumours

His agent though appears non-commital over links to Leeds, though did admit to LUFC FANZONE he would be keen.

“There’s been a lot of speculation in the media about different Premiership clubs being interested in John,” he said.

“At the moment, his sole focus is on playing for Reading and doing the best he can with them.

“Leeds United is a great club and their style of play, manager, and fans would be good for John moving forward in his career.

“However, no formal approaches have been made that we are aware of by Leeds to Reading at this stage.”
