Villarreal cause major upset as late Samuel Chukwueze goal dumps Bayern Munich out of Champions League

Samuel Chukwueze scored a dramatic late goal as Villarreal soaked up an avalanche of Bayern Munich pressure to draw 1-1 on the night to secure a 2-1 win that booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals.

Hosts Bayern started the match as favourites, despite trailing 1-0 from last week’s first leg at El Madrigal. However, under the lights of an electric Allianz Arena, the Bundesliga champions looked to make early inroads.

However, in Villarreal they met a stubborn side determined to frustrate their hosts. To that end, the yellow wall that is Raul Albiol made an astonishing eight clearances in the opening 45.

Indeed, in a largely ineventful first half for the hosts, Bayern only managed one effort on target. That through the head of Jamal Musiala, who directed it straight at Geronimo Rulli.

As it went, it was Villarreal who came closest to extending their lead. They had two decent openings with first-leg hero Arnaut Danjuma lashing a shot wide and Gerard Moreno crashing one into the sidenetting.

Bayern though started the second half with much more intent, Leroy Sane trying a long-distance free-kick which hit the wall.

The former Man City man then teed up the game’s first big opening for Bayern, but Dayot Upamecano was unable to keep his effort on target.

Thomas Muller then lifted a chance over the bar with that kind of chance you’d normally expect the German to take.

Lewandowski opens scoring

However, it Bayern did make the breakthrough on 52 minutes when Villarreal got caught trying to overplay the ball out of defence. That allowed Muller to nip in and feed Lewandowski, who scored with his first shot on target.

Bayern then pushed for a second with Muller heading a gilt-edged chance wide following Sane’s cross. Kingsley Coman then cut inside and tried his luck, only to fire his drive over.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side continued to to probe, but it Francis Coquelin who almost made himself a hero for Villarreal. The former Arsenal midfielder suddenly found himself with a sight at goal, but dragged his shot wide of the target.

Bayern though were undaunted and continued to seek the second to book their place in the semi-finals.

However, with 88 minutes on the clock, it was Villarreal who made scored to break Bayern hearts.

The move was started by Giovani Lo Celso, who carried the ball forward, before playing the ball out to Moreno. He then fed in Chukwueze who rifled a stunning shot into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

The goal sparked incredible scenes from Unai Emery, who went absolutely nuts on the touchline. Rarely has the former Arsenal boss been so animated and jubilant.

And that’s how it stayed as the Yellow Submarine booked their place in the last four. They will then play the winners of Liverpool and Benfica for a place in the final. Liverpool play their second leg on Wednesday night holding a 3-1 advantage.
