West Ham are contenders for ‘classic centre-forward’ after 25-goal season

West Ham United are showing an interest in Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst, who has previously attracted Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report.

After delaying their pursuit of a replacement for Sebastien Haller in January, it will be an important summer for West Ham. Signing a striker remains a priority as they look to strengthen a squad that will have European commitments next season. Just like in the previous transfer window, several strikers are on their radar.

The latest name to be added to their agenda is Weghorst, who will be representing the Netherlands at Euro 2020.

Weghorst scored 20 goals from 34 Bundesliga appearances last season, also providing eight assists. He added a further five goals between the Europa League and DFB Pokal. Now, the 28-year-old is in demand across Europe.

Wolfsburg secured qualification for the Champions League after finishing fourth, but they still might not be able to keep their star striker.

According to The Athletic, the German club will allow Weghorst to leave for a fee of €30m. They expect there to be plenty of interest in him.

It is claimed that West Ham are among his potential suitors, after Newcastle and Tottenham also tried to lure him over the past year.

Whether those rivals remain keen is unclear, with Spurs being suggested again if Harry Kane leaves. But the Hammers seem to definitely be in the hunt.

The report describes Weghorst as a “classic centre-forward”, which is certainly the kind of player West Ham need. Michail Antonio has impressed in the striker’s role, but they could do with another option there.

West Ham looking at Daka

But Weghorst is not the only player West Ham could consider for the striker’s role. Earlier this week, there was an update on their interest in RB Salzburg frontman Patson Daka.

The 22-year-old has been scoring for fun in Austria, with 61 goals in all competitions over the past two seasons.

West Ham have been mentioned as contenders for his signature, but so have the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool.

There was a sigh of relief regarding one of those rivals, though, when Fabrizio Romano denied reports that Chelsea were close to signing him.

Hence, there could be hope for West Ham to get Daka yet if they decide to pursue him instead of Weghorst.
