Wijnaldum hits stunner as Netherlands escape Ukraine nightmare with thrilling win

Georginio Wijnaldum’s brilliant first-time strike played its part as the Netherlands weathered a Ukraine comeback to win a five-goal Euro 2020 thriller 3-2.

After a goalless first half, ex-Liverpool and now Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Wijnaldum strike broke the deadlock.

Memphis Depay’s cross was palmed away, but only into the 30-year-old’s path to run and thump it first time into the top corner.

Six minutes later, Wout Weghorst got his first international goal as Frank de Boer’s side increased their lead.

West Ham’s Andriy Yarmolenko gave the Netherlands a scare with a fantastic long-range finish and Roman Yaremchuk completed the comeback from a free-kick.

However, Denzel Dumfries then got his first international goal to seal a thrilling win after 85 minutes.
