Wolves clear up Ruben Neves future with contract clarification

Wolves have reassured fans that Ruben Neves will not be leaving the club this summer after speculation claimed they would listen to offers for the player.

The Express & Star this week claimed that officials would listen to offers for 24-year-old Neves. The price tag put on the classy playmaker was upwards of £45m – a similar fee that Liverpool paid for winger Diogo Jota. But general manager of football operations Matt Wild has poured cold water on any exit talk and clarified the length of Neves’ contract

When Neves signed his long-term contract in 2018 it was announced as a deal until 2023. However, Wild says Neves’ deal actually runs until 2024 so any panic about losing him for a cut-price fee is misplaced.

Wild told the Express & Star: “I think in the press or our fans are thinking he’s only signed up to 2023, but in fact he is on contract until 2024.

“He’s still got another three years, so fans don’t need to worry that he’s going to be going anywhere, or he’s going to be out of contract any time soon. So, yes, he’s still got another three years on his contract.”

According to 90min in April a midfield talisman was added to Man Utd’s list of targets. They declared that Neves was in their sights. The Portugal international has also been linked with Liverpool.

It was revealed that Neves has a special bond with Liverpool coaches Pep Lijnders and Vitor Matos from their time at Porto.

The Daily Star reported in December that Neves could follow Joto to Anfield.

Neves has been a key figure for Wolves since he arrived from Porto for £15m in 2017.

He played a major part in their Championship title success, as well as securing two top-seven Premier League finishes. However, last season proved tougher for Wolves and they dropped to 13th in the Premier League.

Trust us, say Wolves

Nuno Espirito-Santo has decided to move on, leaving Wolves facing angry fans and a search for a new boss.

Executive chairman Jeff Shi has though called on fans to trust them.

He said: “I do hear from them and I do want them to be happy, so sometimes I feel not that good when they show me some negativity.

“Just now I did an email to one of them, because every week I receive several emails from the fans, and I do try to reply to them, and for the email today, I said my major job is not to please the fans by words. It’s hollow, it has no meaning – I can tell you we’ll do better or whatever, but it doesn’t really make the future better.

“My major job is to do good things for the club by actions not by words. So I don’t want to come out to speak to you every day, it doesn’t help, so you have to save my time to focus on the job inside the club.”
