Wolves director reveals ‘exciting’ attributes as Barcelona starlet joins on loan

Wolves have made their second summer signing by bringing in Portuguese winger Francisco Trincao on loan from Barcelona.

Bruno Lage is bolstering his ranks after replacing Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach at Molineux. His first summer signing was Colombian defender Yerson Mosquera and now he has added an attacker to his squad. Trincao has arrived on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

A product of the Braga academy, Trincao moved to Barcelona in January 2020. Since then, he has made 42 appearances and scored three goals for the La Liga giants. However, he only started three league matches last season.

The 21-year-old has clear potential, but needs to build up more regular gametime – and will hope to do so with Wolves.

The latest addition to Wolves’ Portuguese contingent, Trincao previously played with Pedro Neto at Braga. He has also been capped at senior level by his country.

Able to play on either wing or in behind the striker, he will help boost Wolves’ attacking options as they prepare to make several changes to their squad this summer.

Another client of Jorge Mendes’ Gestifute agency, Trincao will be hoping to emulate the success of some of his stablemates at Molineux.

Wolves technical director Scott Sellars is excited by the arrival of Trincao and feels he will be a success in the Premier League.

He told the club website: “He’s a really exciting player. It’s an area we’d like more competition, in terms of wide players. I think the fans are going to enjoy watching him play, he drives with the ball well and has good creativity.

“We’ve watched him a lot, especially over the last couple of months, so he’s been on our radar for quite a while. He’s got loads of quality; signing for Barcelona from Braga shows what potential he’s got. He’s 21 and has played quite a lot of games in La Liga, so we think he’s ready for the Premier League.

“He’s a player who drifts past people and he has a great change of direction when he’s moving with the ball. He has great speed over two or three yards, to change direction and get away from people, can score and create, and is an exciting player.

“He’s a player who has good experience, a good pedigree in terms of club and international games he’s had, so he’s certainly a player who is going to add quality to the squad.”

Lage ‘speaks highly’ of Trincao

Wolves did not carry any quotes from Lage about Trincao’s arrival, but Sellars revealed that the manager is a big fan of his compatriot.

He added: “We have a large Portuguese contingent, and they look after each other well, but are also integrated in the whole group. They’re really hard-working, with a good mentality, so I’m sure he’ll integrate well and settle in quickly.

“With the manager’s Portuguese background, he knows him and speaks very highly of him, so he’s a player we’re very excited to be bringing to the club.”

Trincao’s loan will run until the end of the 2021-22 season. Should they want to continue working with him, they can buy him permanently as part of the agreement.
