Wolves ‘stand firm’ and put £40m price tag on Man Utd, Arsenal-linked star

Wolves have reportedly given midfielder Ruben Neves a £40million price tag amid transfer links with Manchester United and Arsenal.

The central midfielder has made 19 Premier League appearances for the Molineux club this season. He has registered two goals – one in October’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa, and another in the 2-1 victory against Brentford last time out.

Neves has a knack for scoring goals from outside the box and did so against the Bees, curling a right-footed effort past Jonas Lossl to give Wolves all three points.

He has been ever-present in the Wanderers first team since joining from Porto in July 2017. However, links with United and Arsenal are hotting up.

A report from The Sun on January 6 stated the Red Devils are ‘determined’ to take him to Old Trafford. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick appears keen to bolster his midfield options and Neves is an ideal solution.

A separate update from the Evening Standard claims the Portugal international is on a four-man shortlist for midfield signings at Arsenal.

Gunners technical director Edu is also looking at Juventus’ Arthur, Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa and Lyon star Bruno Guimaraes. However, the latter is on the verge of joining Newcastle and will undergo a medical today.

The Sun now return to the transfer rumours and reveal Wolves are ‘standing firm’ over Neves. They will not accept bids worth £35million this month, as has previously been suggested, and instead want £40m.

Bruno Lage’s team are apparently confident this will put United and Arsenal off.

Wolves have also set their sights on qualifying for Europe after reaching eighth in the table with three consecutive Premier League wins. This would help them the club in their bid to keep Neves around.

Pundit has different valuation

While Wolves value Neves at £40m, former player David Edwards thinks he is worth far more than that.

“I believe Neves is arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League at the moment. The bigger clubs should be knocking Wolves’ door down,” Edwards said (via Molineux News).

“He would be a bargain at anything under £100million at the moment, he really would. He does everything you want from a holding midfielder.”

Neves is not the only Wolves midfielder who could be on the move. Team-mate Joao Moutinho is a target for Jose Mourinho at Roma.

According to Football Italia, who cite Corriere dello Sport, the manager wants Moutinho to move to Serie A. And he could be helped by agent Jorge Mendes, who represents both men.
