Harry Kane told his team have made serious clanger with efforts to force transfer

Dimitar Berbatov feels that Harry Kane’s advisors have made an error of judgement in relying on a reported gentleman’s agreement over his transfer future.

The England captain has made his desire to leave Spurs well-known. He did not feature in Tottenham’s opening-day victory over Man City, due to him not yet being match fit. However, his efforts to leave north London and move to Manchester City are overarching the situation.

Kane feels he has a gentleman’s agreement with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. In a reported chat between the pair last summer, Levy said Kane could leave if the club failed to win a trophy or make the top four in 2020/21.

Meanwhile, the issue of the striker’s fee remains. Levy reportedly wants £150million for his star man, with City’s best offer so far reaching £127million.

Former Spurs striker Berbatov went through a similar transfer saga in 2008. Following rife speculation, he made a deadline-day move from Tottenham to Manchester United.

“I know first-hand that it is a very difficult situation, but even with everything going on I would like to see him play,” Berbatov told Betfair. “At least that way he could help the team. If he doesn’t get involved in any matches, then I think we have a problem.

“It’s easy in this situation to have accusations flying all over the place, the only people who know the true story are Harry Kane, his agent and Daniel Levy.

“If they did speak at the end of last season and they had a gentleman’s agreement which has been broken, it isn’t a great situation and it’s no surprise that Kane is p****d off.”

The so-called gentleman’s agreement has been widely covered and while Berbatov can relate to Kane, he thinks that he should have seen this coming.

“Kane’s team shouldn’t have been so naive with this situation because football is a business. Of course, we like that gentlemen’s style of shaking hands and saying, ‘yes, you have my word’, but sometimes in football it doesn’t work like this and you get angry.

“In this case, the only scenario I can see that will resolve the situation is for City to give Daniel Levy what he wants, knowing how he does business that’s the only way Kane will go.”

City’s second reported bid of £125million wasn’t enough to tempt Spurs to sell, who are still holding onto their original valuation of the player.

Tottenham proved impressive without Kane

Despite Kane’s absence from the side at the weekend, they were still able to beat last season’s champions thanks to Son Heung-min’s second-half strike.

“Beating the champions was a statement from the players, it was as if they were saying ‘look there is a life after Harry Kane, we can do without him if we need to’,” Berbatov added.

“At the moment, everybody still wants to impress the new coach, to make sure that they are in his plans, this all leads to more pressure on the pitch and more shared responsibility.

“City won’t be too bothered with that loss, yes, it wasn’t ideal, but they know that the season is long and they had a slow start last time out and won it.”

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has repeatedly insisted that he is not listening to the outside speculation.

He faces his former side Wolves on Sunday.
