Messi questions PSG CL credentials after delivering Liverpool snub
Lionel Messi feels three Premier League clubs have an excellent chance of winning the Champions League but did not name Liverpool among the trio.
The 34-year-old is in his first season with Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Barcelona in the summer. The Catalans could not offer him a new deal and he reluctantly left the LaLiga giants after 21 years. PSG were happy to accommodate the Argentina ace and he has finally broken his duck with a goal against Manchester City.
The Parisians are among the favourites to win Europe’s elite club competition this term. They are top of Group A having drawn with Club Brugge and taken care of City 2-0.
United sit third in Group F after defeat to Young Boys and a 2-1 triumph over Villarreal. Liverpool top Group B with maximum points.
Having edged Milan 3-2 they thrashed Porto 5-1 and are two points clear of their next opponents, Atletico Madrid. However, when namechecking who might rival PSG this season, Messi omitted the Merseysiders.
Six things the new owners need to do at Newcastle United
“It is true that the centre of attention is on PSG,” he told L’Equipe (via The Mirror). “But there are other very strong teams, such as Chelsea, the Manchester teams, Real Madrid, who always responds, Inter Milan, Bayern.”
Liverpool have made a strong start to their Premier League campaign and sit second in the table behind Chelsea. Mohamed Salah is in the form of his life and has been tipped to challenge for the Ballon d’Or.
There are even a few pundits who feel he is now the equal of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the Barca legend proved he is far from a spent force with his goal against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Messi feels PSG still ‘one step back’
Messi arrival in the French capital to much fanfare, with the Parisians tipped for Champions League glory. They have a stellar side, with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the ranks.
But Messi believes that the collective is far more important that any individual brilliance in delivering success.
“We have great individuals, but we still have to know each other well to form a team. To win important titles you have to play as a team,” he added. “That is what makes me say that we are still one step back compared to all these clubs , who have more collective experience than us.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are next in European action when they face German club RB Leipzig on October 19.
