Touching scenes as Jeff Stelling announces intention to leave Soccer Saturday
Soccer Saturday host Jeff Stelling has revealed his intention to leave the role at the end of the season.
The Sky Sports stalwart first hosted the show back in 1994, alongside the likes of Chris Kamara, Rodney Marsh and Man Utd legend George Best. He has gone on to become a staple of British TV, taking part in some of football’s most iconic moments.
The lifelong Hartlepool fan will mark 30 years at Sky in 2022, but the current campaign will be his last.
When appearing on the latest edition of the show, Stelling said: “Before we do the team news for Newcastle [vs Chelsea], I’ve got some team news from Sky Sports and Soccer Saturday to tell you about.
“I’ll have been at Sky for 30 years next year – I know it’s hard to believe – and have hosted Soccer Saturday for the past 25 or so. But I’ve come to the incredibly difficult decision that this will be my final season.
“It’s my decision, there’s been no pressure whatsoever. Sky have been absolutely brilliant with me, as they always have done. I’m not intending to retire, that’s up to people out there.
“But it’s time to let someone else have a go at what is the best job in the world. I’m gonna be here until May, and then I’ll leave the show and the company. So that’s about seven months of Saturday afternoon parties.”
Stelling’s touching announcement was applauded by his co-workers, before they continued their excellent job of keeping the nation updated on live matches.

Stelling and Kamara’s greatest moment
While we’re on the topic of Soccer Saturday, let’s remind ourselves of arguably their best moment.
In April 2010, Kamara was at Fratton Park covering Portsmouth vs Blackburn Rovers. Anthony Vanden Borre was dismissed for the home side after picking up a second yellow card in the 60th minute.
But when Stelling quizzed Kamara on the event, the former Brentford and Leeds man was clueless.
Here is the pair recreating the infamous video over ten years later.
2020 has been absolutely shocking, this video of Jeff Stelling and Chris Kamara reenacting THAT famous moment as each other is everything we needed to round off the year… enjoy
