Solskjaer still questioned for reluctance with ‘so obvious’ Man Utd solution

Edinson Cavani deserves to be starting every game for Manchester United, claims one pundit who thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reluctance to use him has been one of the biggest question marks of their season.

Cavani was back on the scoresheet for United on Saturday as they condemned Tottenham to a 3-0 defeat. It was the ideal response to the previous weekend’s loss to Liverpool, which had put Solskjaer’s job under more pressure than ever before.

The manager changed things up to inspire a reaction – bringing in Cavani for just his second league start of the season. The switch had the desired effect.

Solskjaer said in the aftermath that the 34-year-old striker had thoroughly impressed in training during the week. It seems he has earned himself plenty more opportunities by backing that up on the pitch.

Someone who thinks Cavani should be playing a lot more is pundit Frank McAvennie.

“If you play Cavani, you will see results,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Cavani is a great striker, I have been saying this for weeks. He needs to be starting.

“It’s one of the reasons I have been questioning Ole. It’s so obvious to me.

“The whole thing is shocking, Cavani should be in there every game.

“He scored bags of goals last season and he has just been sat on the bench for most of this season.

“Just play your best players. I don’t get why Man United are relying on players who are unproven.

“Some of the lads who have been playing are very talented but they lack the experience of Cavani.

“He scores goals, it’s what he does. Start him and you will see results.”

Patience paying off for Cavani

Cavani committed for another season in the summer after scoring 17 goals in his debut season in Manchester.

There have been some concerns, though, that he may not see this season out in a red shirt due to his lack of gametime, which has been a side-effect of the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Cavani has previously vowed to keep working hard for his place and it seems those efforts are paying off.

“Sometimes you play more, sometimes you play less, managers make decisions, but that doesn’t stop the work to always be competitive,” he said earlier this month.

“The league has just started and I have needed to be, not quite like last year, but I’m there to be a part of it.”

The Uruguayan certainly played his part on Saturday and now there will be further calls for Solskjaer to increase his gametime.
