Former Man Utd midfielder digs out Solskjaer’s ‘idea of football’

Bastian Schweinsteiger rubbed salt into Manchester United’s wounds on Saturday with half-time comments after they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The former United midfielder took to Twitter at half-time to vent his anger with United 2-0 down to their cross-city rivals. City claimed the lead within seven minutes as Joao Cancelo whipped in a cross from the left and Eric Bailly sliced into his own net.

Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 to City on the stroke of half-time. Playing as a false nine, Silva slid in to meet a Cancelo cross at the back post and squeezed the ball through the grasp of a fumbling David De Gea,

City dominated possession of the ball from there on in, but did not add to their lead.

It was another example of City dominating their rivals with a distinct style of play.

“Passive Man Utd vs active Man City,” Schweinsteiger tweeted. “The idea of football couldn’t be more different,” tweeted Schweinsteiger, who made 35 appearances for United between 2015 and 2017.

“I wish United would be more active and not chasing the ball non stop – losing their energy. Take away the ball of Pep’s team. Come on Utd, you’re playing at Old Trafford!”

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness was furious with Bruno Fernandes, who failed to track back during the build up to the first goal.

He told Sky Sports: “Watch Fernandes here. ‘Why don’t you cross the ball here I’m not going to close you down’.

‘That is a joke’

“It’s a simple thing but it’s a fundamental thing, stop the crosses. Stop the crosses, do your mates in the middle of the goal a favour by putting the ball under pressure to stop the cross.

“That is a joke. The second goal is brought about by people doing the same thing and not doing the fundamental things.”

Speaking before the game, Keane hailed Fernandes’ attacking play, but questioned the 27-year-old’s character.

Keane said: “The only thing I want to see more from him in certain games when Manchester United might be under the cosh is show some more personality. Show some more character, particularly when they’re out of possession.

“We know United are good when they’re in possession and he’s got players running ahead of him. He will pick them out, we’ve seen that the last two or three years.

“Outstanding player. But I just need to see a bit more from him when Man Utd are out of possession and under the cosh.

“That’s where you need to see his character and personality and not to be throwing his arms about. But talent-wise, fantastic.”
