Milan strategy plays into Newcastle hands as path to giant defender clears

Newcastle United have received a boost in their efforts to sign Lille defender Sven Botman after it emerged AC Milan’s proposed deal does not suit the French club.

The 21-year-old is on the radar of a number of clubs due to his stellar performances for the Ligue 1 champions. The Netherlands Under-21 ace started 37 games as Les Dogues pipped Paris Saint-Germain to the 2020-2021 Ligue 1 title. He has enjoyed 12 league outings this term, missing six weeks of action due to a groin strain.

Now fit again, the talented centre-back can expect to be the subject of bids in the January transfer window. The Magpies have long been linked with the Dutchman.

But other clubs have also shown an interest with West Ham United and Manchester United thought to be keen. The Tynesiders’ main rivals appeared to be Milan.

However, they could now be out of the picture after a report by TuttoMercatoWeb. The Italian outlet are suggesting that the Serie A giants want to take Botman on a loan-to-buy deal.

That is not acceptable to Lille who only want to sell him permanently. Newcastle have cash to spend after the Saudi-backed takeover.

There are conflicting reports on how much the former SC Heerenveen stopper would cost. A price tag of round £40m has been mentioned although the latest suggestion is closer to £25m.

What is certain is that Lille need the cash up front and that improves any suitors’ bargaining power.

Botman among many Newcastle targets

The north-east outfit will have a problem convincing players to join them next month due to their league position. Down in 19th spot, manager Eddie Howe has a mammoth job on his hands to keep them in England’s top division.

The carrot will be the prospect of much better times ahead, with several top players expected to join the revolution. One man thought to be on Howe’s wish-list was Tottenham’s Dele Alli.

However, a report on Monday claims they are no longer interested in the midfielder. His star does appear to be on the wane in north London.

But he is still young enough to turn his career around elsewhere. Former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo is another player who could arrive at St James’ Park.

Now on the books at Saudi Arabian outfit Al Shabab star, the former Nigeria international is said to be open to the idea. He knows the English game well, having spent two-and-a-half years with Watford, scoring 39 times.

Landing a striker will be key, but Newcastle’s defence is the area that needs strengthening the most.
