In-form Serie A midfielder ‘firmly’ on Newcastle radar but familiar face could be obstacle

A report in France claims Newcastle United will make a move for Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout in the January transfer window.

The Magpies are in desperate need of help as they look to pull themselves out of the mire. The north-east outfit sit 19th in the top-flight standings and are in real danger of relegation. Eddie Howe’s side have taken only 11 points and the clubs above them all have games in hand.

Therefore the winter window will be crucial if they are to avoid the drop. Many players have been linked with a move to St James’ Park due to the finances available to the boss.

And Veretout is the latest, according to French outlet Footmercato, via TBR. They report that the Tynesiders have ‘firmly set their sights’ on the France international.

The 28-year-old has impressed for Jose Mourinho’s side this term, making 18 Serie A starts. He has bagged four goals and enjoyed a first call up to the France side in the summer.

The former Nantes ace made his international debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina and has five caps for Les Bleus. Veretout has registered five assists for the Eternal City outfit in 2021-2022, helping them to sixth in the table.

Versatile Veretout ticks many boxes

It is inevitable that Newcastle will bring in new faces next month. Howe inherited a squad devoid of confidence and lacking in real talent.

But the Saudi-backed takeover means there are funds available. It will be tough for the ex-Bournemouth chief to land really big-name stars due to the Magpies’ parlous situation.

He wants players who are prepared to dig in and graft over the remainder of the season. Veretout fits the bill as he is a hard-working but skilful midfielder.

He is capable of playing a holding role in midfield as well as in a more advanced position. Fans of Aston Villa know him well as the former Fiorentina schemer played one season for the West Midlanders.

He made 21 top-flight starts in 2015-2016 but did not impress, and was loaned to Saint-Etienne before moving to Florence.

It seems as though he is now showing his true colours and may have a chance to set the record straight in English football.

He is valued at around £27m, a sum that would not faze Newcastle. Whether Mourinho will let him go is another matter.
