Lage won’t accept Wolves label but cites what must still improve after Man Utd scalp

Wolves boss Bruno Lage felt his side deserved to beat Manchester United and should have scored more than the solitary goal they managed.

The West Midlanders were looking to continue the decent run of form after beating Brighton and drawing with Chelsea. And they pulled off a 1-0 triumph thanks to Joao Moutinho’s second-half strike. He struck in the 82nd minute to give the Molineux outfit their first win at Old Trafford in 42 years.

The visitors dominated the opening period, with United off the pace and indebted to goalkeeper David de Gea. And they were good value for the three points that sees them move up to eighth in the standings.

But Lage refused to get carried away and made it clear that his charges will be keeping their feet firmly on the floor.

“It is one more victory. Lovely stadium, a place with a lot of history but the most important thing is how we played,” he told Sky Sports. “We played in our way, we controlled the first half and missed a lot of chances. We win three points, and have more chances than goals.”

And the Portuguese tactician was delighted with the way his side managed to stifle the opposition’s star forwards.

“We deserved the three points,” he added. “Every time I am positive and try to win the games. This is football, they had one good chance for Bruno.”

Lage sets the record straight

Wolves have struggled to find the net this season and have scored only 14 goals in the league. Only basement club Norwich City have bagged fewer.

The Black County outfit have been accused of being too negative at times. But Lage was quick to point out that the lack of goals is not for the want of trying.

“Goals are a problem but creating chances is not,” he told BBC Sport. “People just look at stats and think we are defending. When we have the ball, we come here and how many chances did we create in the first half?”

However, the 45-year-old former Benfica coach admits that they could do with finding the net on a more regular basis.

“After this, one more goal. Tomorrow is a day off but after that the players need to improve,” he continued. “The way we’re playing and creating chances, we need to score more goals.”

Next up for Wanderers is the visit of Sheffield United on Sunday as Wolves begin their FA Cup campaign.
