Wolves aim to solve problem position with smart January signing on the cheap

Bruno Lage wants to bring Mexico defender Carlos Salcedo to Wolves according to a report, with the side’s depth in the position suffering at present.

Wolves have been defensively strong for the entire season. The Black Country outfit have conceded just 14 goals in the Premier League this season.

In fact, that tally is the second best in the league, and just one higher than league-leaders Manchester City. What’s more, there have only been three league games where Wolves have conceded more than one goal.

Defensive solidity is clearly a major aspect of Lage’s system.

However, with Romain Saiss away at AFCON, and Willy Boly and Yerson Moquera injured, the defence is likely to suffer. Indeed, those factors have meant the depth in the heart of the defence is severely reduced.

As such, Lage wants to bring in a competent defender, so as to not let his side’s defensive solidity slip. W Deportes reports that the side are interested in Tigres defender Salcedo.

Salcedo has made 48 appearances for Mexico, showcasing his ability. Furthermore, he has been a mainstay of the Tigres side over the past couple of seasons.

However, the Mexican is in the final year of his deal with the side. Moreover, his release clause is just £7.3million, which seems a steal should Wolves want to activate it.

What’s more, Wolves play Arsenal, Tottenham, Leicester and West Ham consecutively in February. Indeed, they will want to ensure defensive solidity for those tough fixtures.

While the deal for Salcedo seems a good one to pursue, there is interest for the 29-year-old from at least three other sides. Wolves may want to act fast to ensure they can land him in January.

Salcedo joins Badiashile as Wolves defensive target

While Wolves are interested in Salcedo in the short term, they also hold interest in a defender beyond January. Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile is a target of Wolves’, though they would likely hold out until the summer.

The Frenchman missed just three games during Monaco’s impressive campaign last season, when they finished third in Ligue 1.

His performances then led to interest from Manchester United. In fact, the Red Devils failed with a £22million bid for the centre-back.

As such, it seems Wolves would have to pay around £25million for the French Under-21 star.
