Burnley confirm big transfer deal for 6ft 6in striker Wout Weghorst

Burnley have completed the signing of Holland international forward Wout Weghorst from Wolfsburg for a reported £12m fee.

The 6ft 6in striker has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract and is set to train with his new team-mates on Monday. Weghorst passed a medical on Sunday and will take the No.9 shirt vacated by Chris Wood, who moved to Newcastle earlier this month.

“Wout is a player that our scouts have been strong on for some time and we feel that he can add to all that we do at Burnley Football Club,” said manager Sean Dyche.

“His signing is a continued show of the club’s and team’s development. We wish Wout well as he earns the right to push our group forwards.”

Weghorst, capped 12 times by Holland, has scored 59 goals in 118 Bundesliga appearances.

Club chairman Alan Pace told the club’s website: “I’d like to wish Wout a very warm welcome to Burnley Football Club.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have brought in a great talent with a fantastic goal-scoring pedigree in Germany. I look forward to him joining up with Sean and the team.

“January is a famously difficult window, as we all know. I am however delighted that a lot of hard work by everyone involved has paid off.”

Burnley had turned their attention to signing Liverpool striker Divock Origi, according to The Sun.

The 26-year-old Belgium international has just six months left to run on his current deal at Anfield. Fiorentina and Atalanta in Serie A are believed to be interested, but after the arrival of Weghorst Burnley are unlikely now to pursue a move for Origi.

Meanwhile, Maxwel Cornet is due back tomorrow to join team-mates in training after returning from the African Cup of Nations.

Watford midfielder Dan Gosling has also been linked with the Clarets. Howwever, Sky Sports say that has been “knocked down by Burnley today”.

Dyche does retain an interest in Aaron Ramsey though. However, the Wales midfielder looks bound for Wolves amid interest from Rangers.

The Juve man reportedly turned down Burnley earlier in the month and unless he has a dramatic change of heart, a move looks unlikely.
