Tanguy Ndombele praised after using radical plan to end Tottenham hell
Tanguy Ndombele is reportedly paying the difference between his Tottenham wages and what Lyon were prepared to fork out after sealing his return to the Groupama Stadium.
The club’s record signing is back at his old club on loan for the second half of the campaign, after failing to force his way into Antonio Conte’s plans and then publically showing his frustrations in north London with his actions in the FA Cup win over Morecambe.
Ndombele has shown occasional flashes of brilliance that convinced the club to pay £63m for his signature back in 2019.
However, he has mostly flopped and struggled to convince several Spurs managers of his undoubted quality.
The final straw came in the comeback cup win over the League One side last month. Ndombele started that game but, like many of his teammates, struggled and he was hauled off by Conte. The France star then headed straight down the tunnel to send a message to the Italian.
He never got a look in after that and was allowed to leave on loan in the January window.
Lyon are understood to have paid an initial £1.2m loan fee. They will also have the option to re-sign Ndombele permanently for an estimated £54m this summer.
But according to L’Equipe, Ndombele played a big part in manufacturing his return. He is currently making up the difference between his current Spurs salary and what percentage Lyon were prepared to pay.
The Ligue 1 giants were not able to meet Tottenham’s demands, leaving the deal at risk of collapse before Ndombele made his sacrifice.
Ndombele praised for personal sacrifice
And Lyon director of football Vincent Ponsot has since praised the 25-year-old for going the extra mile.
He said: “It is a loan with loan indemnity, which is based on the partial support of the capital part of the transfer.
“But above all, on the part of Tanguy, there were not only words. He was decisive and it is very rare in this area. He is one of the players who is not economically accessible, but he did everything to be [here].
“Often, we have words without the facts on the contracts. We did our part, we needed a supplement and he was the one who provided it. There, there were facts in front of words.”
Ndombele was officially presented as a Lyon player again on Wednesday afternoon and he can;t wait to get going.
“I didn’t hesitate for long. The discussions were quick. I’m happy to be back,” he explained.
“I’ve known five coaches in two and a half years. It’s not their fault but I had a little trouble at Tottenham. I wanted something else. Lyon, as I know, is better for adaptation.”
