Jamie Carragher sends ominous warning to Bielsa and Leeds as Liverpool priorities are ranked

Jamie Carragher is celebrating the Premier League title race coming back “alive” – but reckons the news might spell big trouble for Leeds United.

Manchester City went into Saturday’s Premier League games a huge nine points adrift of Manchester City. Many observers feel the title race is simply a procession towards Pep Guardiola’s side claiming yet another title triumph. However, Saturday’s results seemed to have changed everything’s thinking.

Indeed, a dramatic day saw Liverpool first having to come from behind to beat Norwich 3-1. New signing Luis Diaz was among the scorers as Jurgen Klopp pinpointed exactly when things clicked for the Reds.

But the biggest drama was still to come as Tottenham scored an injury-time winner to defeat City 3-2 at the Etihad. After the match, Guardiola was left in no doubt as to which player caused his side to lose.

It all means Liverpool are now just six points behind City, with a game in hand. Furthermore, the two sides face off at the Etihad in April in what is surely to be a title showdown.

Liverpool, in fact, play their game in hand this Wednesday night when Leeds United are the visitors to Anfield. The game was due to be played Boxing Day but was postponed in the wake of an injury and Covid crisis at Leeds.

Leeds game an opportunity

At the time of the rearranged fixture, many thought it did the Reds few favours coming just a few days before the Carabao Cup final.

However, City’s loss puts new emphasis on Wednesday’s game – and Carragher for one can’t wait.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match at the Etihad, Carragher seemed in a buoyant mood.

“The title race is back alive,” he beamed.

“I’d still favour Man City with Liverpool still to come to the Etihad. And, off the top of my head, I think Liverpool’s fixtures may be tougher.”

Carragher though insists Liverpool may well put more emphasis on the clash with Leeds than they do the cup final.

And despite the Reds having the chance to win the trophy for the first time under Klopp, Carragher feels the Leeds game is more vital.

Jamie Carragher: Leeds game more important than cup final

“I certainly think for the next four or five days, the Leeds game at Anfield is more important than the cup final on the Sunday against Chelsea.

“There was a little bit of hope that Liverpool could do something, a glimmer of hope, when City dropped points at Southampton.

“It was the first time in such a long time that they hadn’t won and you very rarely see a Pep Guardiola team get pegged back. So I’d still say they are very much in the hotseat.

“Even a team of Liverpool’s quality coming here to win will not be easy. But the great thing not just for Liverpool supporters but for the country is that it looks like we could have a title race on.

“Four to six weeks ago we thought that wasn’t going to be the case. Long may it continue,” Jamie Carragher concluded.

Following the Carabao Cup final, Liverpool face a home date with West Ham on March 5, before a trip to Brighton on March 12.

They then face Arsenal away (March 16) and Manchester United at home four days later.

A home date with Watford on April 2 follows that, before the trip to Manchester City on April 9.
