‘That’s when you really have a problem’ – Schmeichel opens up on worrying Leicester struggles
Leicester City captain Kasper Schmeichel says the team are ‘not looking for excuses’ for their poor form, despite a host of injuries this season.
It is no secret that the Foxes have not met expectations this season. Indeed, they are currently 12th in the Premier League, five points into the bottom half.
This season has seen an unexpected dip in form. The East Midlands outfit have not failed to finish in the top half of the league since 2016/17.
The dip can be attributed to a number of things, not least the host of injuries to key players. Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, Youri Tielemans and James Justin have all spent periods on the sidelines. Even more crucially has been the ongoing absences of Wesley Fofana and Jonny Evans.
While those injuries have not helped matters, Schmeichel does not see that as a viable excuse.
“We’re not looking for excuses in terms of players being out,” he said via Leicester Mercury.
“Everyone knows who we’ve been missing in vital positions in vital times, but it’s the same for any team. Any team can encounter that, so it’s about how you deal with it.”
What’s more, he feels a lack of consistent performances has been as much to blame for the poor form.
“We have struggled with our form, it hasn’t been as consistent as we would want it.,” he added.
“You’re going to have seasons where you have problems with consistency. You have to mitigate it as much as you can.”
Schmeichel happy with Foxes effort
The captain also spoke on the fight the players are showing in order to turn things around.
“But the main thing is that when you look in training, people are working hard and are still of the right mentality. If the case was that people aren’t working hard enough, that’s when you really have a problem,” he said.
“We are working extremely hard and that’s why, from the inside, the perspective is still good for the season.”
Indeed, fans will be happy to know the squad is attempting to rectify things.
