Graeme Souness lambasts ‘shocking’ Wolves decisions that sparked West Ham loss
Graeme Souness blasted the Wolves defence following the 1-0 loss to West Ham at the weekend, focussing his criticism towards Romain Saiss.
Wolves have been one of the best sides in the Premier League in terms of defensive stability this season. They have conceded just 21 goals in 26 league games.
Indeed, there are only three teams in the league with a better defensive record – the top three. Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool have conceded 17, 18 and 20 goals, respectively.
Despite Wolves only conceding one goal to fifth-placed West Ham at the weekend, they received flak from Sky Sports pundit Souness.
“It’s shocking and beggars belief what he [Saiss] is thinking at that particular time, you defend the middle of your goal,” he said, quoted by Birmingham Mail.
Souness continued his criticism of Saiss, as the centre-back did not follow the lead of his captain Conor Coady, allowing Tomas Soucek to score.
“I mean he has to take his line off Coady, if you go back to the very beginning they never look over their shoulders, they never look to the left-hand side to see where the danger may come from,” he added.
“So what should Saiss be doing now? Take the line off Coady and then for some unbelievable reason he decides to run out.
“It is totally irresponsible defending that has cost Wolves the game.”
Indeed, that one goal was enough to hand Wolves their second-straight league defeat. The Black Country outfit are now down to eighth place in the Premier League.
Saiss and Kilman have usually impressed
In contrast, fellow Wolves centre-back Max Kilman is receiving admiration from several sources. His latest admirer appears to be Gareth Southgate, which points to an England call-up.
The England manager has been scouting players who could make the England side soon.
Kilman has been tipped to become an international for much of the season.
Should he continue to perform, he could well find his way into the next Three Lions squad.
