Harry Kane gives Tottenham clue as Conte comments bring to light two critical conditions
Harry Kane has revealed he is happy with his progress under Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur – although there are still two factors that could convince him away.
Last summer was a long and nervous one for Tottenham when it came to the future of Harry Kane. The England captain was a major target for Manchester City, who had two bids turned down. Eventually, he had to affirm his commitment to his current club.
What followed was a slow start to the season for both Kane and his club. He has been getting back to his best recently, though – particularly since the appointment of Antonio Conte as head coach.
Tottenham are now seventh in the Premier League and have games in hand over fifth and sixth. Despite plenty of bumps along the road, things could be falling into place for them after all.
But their long wait for a trophy is continuing after they were eliminated from all the cup competitions this season. As such, Kane will still be linked with an exit at the end of the season.
Man City could revive their interest and be joined by rivals Manchester United in the pursuit of one of the finest forwards in the Premier League.
The Express carry quotes from Kane before indicating that his future depends on two factors. First, the club must secure Champions League football, and then, Conte must remain in charge.
But from what the 28-year-old has been saying, things are looking more positive in north London.
Kane said: “The manager is a fantastic coach. I’ve said that now on many occasions. I really enjoy working with him, so it’s down to us players to take that responsibility.
“A lot of us want to be playing in the Champions League. We haven’t played in it now for a couple of years but it’s where we think the club should be.
“It’s about feeling that pressure. If we want to move forward as a team, it’s about taking responsibility and we can’t hide away from it.
“Obviously there’s 12 games left now so there’s still a lot of opportunity to pick up points and it’s just down to being more consistent. That’s what we’ve got to try to do until the end of the season.
“We can’t hide away from the fact and we can’t keep saying, ‘We’re learning, we’re improving’. We’re there, we’re in amongst it. All we’ve got to do is be more consistent.”
Harry Kane still developing for Conte and beyond
Continuing his charm offensive of the current Tottenham coach – who has raised doubts over his own future when things haven’t gone so well – Kane explained how he has become a more multi-faceted player under Conte.
He added: “I feel like I’m in a great place. I’m 28 now, I feel like physically I’m in a really good place.
“I feel mentally, my game understanding and my awareness on the pitch is at a really high level from just gaining experience over the years.
“Antonio has definitely given me more strings to my bow. I’m always someone who tries to improve.”
That approach will continue well into the twilight of his career, perhaps showing how ambitious Kane remains. He has vowed to keep developing into his mid-30s and will be keeping his head down until then.
The striker said: “When I’m 35, 36 I’ll still be trying to improve. That’s just my mindset.
“But for sure, I’m in a good place. It’s nice to be scoring goals, winning games, helping the team.
“Overall, it’s about working hard, keeping my head down. There’s always stuff I can improve on, whether it’s finishing, hold-up play, passing.
“And that’s what I’ll continue to do. But for sure, I feel like there’s more and more to come. And I’m excited for that.”
