West Ham to battle Arsenal for duo but questions remain over whether rivals will sell
West Ham are planning a double transfer raid in the summer but will have to overcome a number of obstacles to get the deals done.
The Hammers are keen to make up for the disappointing January window and plans are already afoot. Targets have been identified with at least one striker on the wanted list when the window re-opens. But landing them will be easier said than done.
According to a report in the London Evening Standard Arsenal also want the West Ham targets. The Evening Standard say the Gunners are planning a mass overhaul of their squad with six new players targeted. And two of them are also on David Moyes’ radar.
One of them is the Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. The name is a familiar one to Hammers fans as he was heavily linked with a move in January. Indeed it is thought an offer was made on deadline day but they could not get it over the line.
The 22-year-old remains very high on Moyes’ wanted list and it is easy to see why. The youngster has banged in 20 goals in just 21 league games so knows where the back of the net is.
Nunez in demand
Reproducing it in the Premier League is the next step but he has time on his side and will develop further. West Ham want to do a deal at the end of the season, but so do Arsenal and the battle is on.
Finishing in the Champions League spots could be key and as things stand the Gunners sit in fourth. The Hammers remain in the hunt and now there is extra motivation, if any was needed, to get there.
West Ham will also face strong competition from elsewhere. All the top clubs will be keeping tabs on the Uruguayan, including Newcastle and Liverpool.
The Reds see him as a cheaper alternative to West Ham’s very own Jarrod Bowen, who they continue to target.
West Ham chase Broja
Meanwhile the Evening Standard again reports that West Ham will target exciting forward Armando Broja. The 20-year-old is on the books of Chelsea but is currently impressing while on loan at Southampton.
His performances have not gone unnoticed and West Ham and Arsenal could again do battle. The issue here could be the fact that Chelsea will not be willing to sell to either club.
Broja’s loan will be up at the end of the season and Chelsea will have a decision to make. But it is unlikely to involve selling to either of their London rivals.
Saints will not be seen as much of a threat and could have a better chance of striking a permanent deal. While another loan to help his development is also an option for the Blues next season.
