‘Almost everything you need’ – Rangnick tells Rashford how to regain Man Utd role

Ralf Rangnick insists Marcus Rashford has “almost everything” to succeed as a striker for Manchester United, but has told him what he must do to regain his form.

It has been a challenging season for Rashford. He missed the start of the campaign with a shoulder injury and hasn’t been able to get going since. Indeed, he has only scored four Premier League goals from 18 games so far in 2021-22.

His decline in fortunes has seen him overlooked for selection in some recent games. For example, in the Manchester derby last weekend, United were without fellow forwards Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani. Still, Rangnick left Rashford out.

The England international eventually came on for 26 minutes. However, by that point, the game was already slipping away from Rangnick’s men.

Rashford was not able to influence things anyway. Now, with Cavani and Ronaldo ready to return for Man Utd, he faces a fight for not just his place, but his future.

There have already been reports of Rashford considering whether he ought to remain a Red Devil beyond this season. He could seek a transfer elsewhere.

For now, he must focus on getting back into Rangnick’s thinking when it comes to lineups.

The interim manager is more than happy with how Rashford has been training, but he wants to see him replicate those talents when it matters.

Asked about what Rashford needs to get back in the team, Rangnick told a press conference: “To play on the same level he trains.

“This is all. We spoke about that a week ago, two weeks ago in a press conference.

“Marcus is training well. He’s got an abundant of talent. He’s got almost everything you need for a modern striker.

“It’s about transforming the performance of the training sessions into the regular games.”

Rangnick admits Arsenal favourites for top four

The defeat to City meant United lost ground their race to finish in the top four. They are currently fifth, one point behind an Arsenal side who have three games in hand.

The Gunners seem to have found their form again, making it tough for United – or anyone else from the chasing pack – to break back into the Champions League territory.

But Rangnick, although admitting Arsenal are favourites for a top-four finish, insists the battle is not over.

He said: “Yeah, but not only us, the same is true with two or three other clubs.

“They (Arsenal) seem to be in the best possible position but there are still 10 games to play.

“We are fully aware we have to look after ourselves and not drop any more points.”

Man Utd are next in action on Saturday, when they welcome another contender for the European places, Tottenham Hotspur, to Old Trafford.
