The one that got away as Newcastle star reveals Arsenal January transfer discussions
Bruno Guimaraes has revealed that he spoke to Arsenal, amongst other clubs, before swapping Lyon for Newcastle in the January transfer window.
The talented Brazilian midfielder became Eddie Howe’s third summer of the January window when he completed a £35million, putting pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract at St James’ Park.
His performances at Lyon over an 18-month spell attracted the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and PSG. However, the 24-year-old favoured a switch to Tyneside instead.
Newcastle are the richest club in the world following their Saudi Arabia-backed takeover in October. And it’s clear to see that the money they spent in January has helped them climb away from the relegation places, with Guimaraes playing a part in their impressive form.
But when asked about Arsenal’s interest in him, Guimaraes told Sky Sports: “I did speak to some other clubs, but the only concrete offer came from Newcastle and I really wanted to come here.
“I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League. On top of that it was the start of a new sporting project for the club.”
Despite his reputation as one of European football’s top young talents, Guimaraes’ first start for the club came at Southampton in midweek. However, he marked it in style with a brilliant winner at St Mary’s.
Guimaraes aiming for the very top
On his first few months in the north east of England, the Brazilian added: “Since I’ve arrived, it’s been incredible and I’m so happy to be here. I’m anxious to play more.
“The fans here are really incredible, I’m very lucky. When I walk down the street, I take pictures with the fans and I’ve spoken with them a little. It’s very important for me to do this.”
Liverpool would be top of the Premier League if they had been able to call on this player all season
Guimaraes also has lofty aspirations at St James’ and is targeting Premier League and Champions League glory with his new club.
He added: “If a club has a project and wants to aspire to the maximum, then it’s going to involve winning the Champions League.
“It’s the biggest club competition in the world and obviously we’re keen on winning the Premier League as well.
“The Premier League is fast and intense. Its physicality is similar to France but the Premier League is definitely faster.
“But the best way to learn is by practicing so when I play, I’ll be able to learn quickly.”
