‘I am good enough’ – Southampton star’s future up in the air despite stressing desire to stay

Southampton star Mohamed Elyounoussi has expressed his desire to remain at the club, despite a lack of negotiations over a new deal.

Elyounoussi has shown his quality this season. Indeed, he has been a regular feature in the Saints side, starting 17 games in the Premier League.

What’s more, the winger has impressed, thanks to his attacking qualities. He has contributed to 11 goals across all competitions this term.

Elyounoussi spent the last two seasons on loan at Celtic. His haul of 24 goals and 14 assists was enough for Ralph Hasenhuttl to include him in the Saints squad for this campaign.

Elyounoussi’s contract at Southampton runs out next summer. There has been nothing in the way of negotiations, despite his good performances.

It is clear the winger is enjoying his time at St Mary’s and wants to stay put, per a recent interview, quoted by TV2.

“I think I have shown that I am more than good enough for the Premier League. I really look at this as my first season in the Premier League,” he said.

Indeed, Elyounoussi appeared sparingly for the Saints in the 2018/19 season, but had little impact. He has shown his quality this term, though.

“It can only get better. I think Southampton see that too. I thrive there and have expressed that I would like to stay there longer,” he added.

He seems to be putting himself in a good position to remain with the side, despite a lack of negotiations so far.

Elyounoussi looking ahead

While Elyounoussi is keen to remain with the Saints, it is clear he is keen to do all he can from now until the end of the season, to make that a reality.

“For my part, you have to put yourself in a good position, but it is not something you go around thinking about. It’s about the next match and about doing the best we can, so others can take care of that bit. We have not sat down to talk about it yet,” he said.

“The time is not quite ripe yet, there are still some matches left. We can rather sit down after the end of the season and see what opportunities we have and what Southampton want.”

Should the star continue to perform from now until the end of the season, he could nail down his future with Southampton.
