Icon ‘excited’ by potential Man Utd arrival, but Rio Ferdinand fires stark warning
Brazilian icon Rivaldo is ‘excited’ by Manchester United’s potential appointment of Erik ten Hag, although Rio Ferdinand has sent a stark warning to the club.
Ajax boss ten Hag became the new favourite for the United position on Tuesday. That came after United completed ‘dossiers’ on him, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel.
The following day, the Red Devils reportedly conducted their first formal interview with ten Hag. They believe he is best placed to take the side back to where they belong.
However, it is not plain-sailing for United when it comes to bringing the Dutchman in. According to the Daily Mail, ten Hag is wanted by two Champions League regulars.
That teams remained unnamed, although they are apparently ‘interesting’ him.
Fellow manager Pochettino, currently working at Paris Saint-Germain, may be the subject of an approach from Real Madrid in the coming months.
If United do not act fast, they could lose two of their main targets – which would be a bitter blow.
Erik ten Hag ‘fits United identity’
Amid the uncertainty, Rivaldo has given his verdict on ten Hag’s potential switch to Old Trafford. He said (via Manchester Evening News): “He is an excellent coach. His attacking style and attractive football fits with United’s identity and it’s a pleasure to watch his Ajax team playing.
“So, I’m excited to imagine what he could do with a United squad filled with some of the best players in the world. He would be a great signing for Manchester United.”
ten Hag could be the man to get the best out of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and other stars on a regular basis.
‘A huge decision’ – Rio Ferdinand
However, Ferdinand is requesting caution over the potential appointment. He is also reinforcing the importance of the move as United aim to get back among the Premier League challengers for next season.
“It’s a big decision,” the former defender said (via MEN). “This is the one that changes everything at the club right now. This is the one that has to be the driver to the route to success, sustained success, to get the club to challenge again. It’s a huge decision.
“This is a massive, massive appointment because we’ve been in a bad situation for far too long now.
“It’s about the culture of the club. You need someone who can put the right culture in place.”
