Man Utd want contract talks with two key first-team stars despite continuous Rangnick snubs
Manchester United are reportedly keen to enter contract negotiations with both Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw, despite both players struggling to make Ralf Rangnick’s first team in recent times.
The Red Devils are looking to tie down some of their top talent to new contracts, with recent reports suggesting that Bruno Fernandes is closing in on a new five-year deal worth over £12million-a-year.
But the Portuguese playmaker is not alone in drawing attention from Old Trafford decision-makers.
ESPN claims that United want to push ahead with talks for Rashford and Shaw, despite there being no clarity as yet over who will be the club’s next permanent manager.
Rangnick is in interim charge before he takes an advisory role in the summer, while Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui continue to be linked with the job.
But both Rashford and Shaw have struggled to convince the German they are worthy of regular starting spots.
ESPN adds, however, that the England pair are still viewed as important members of the squad worth keeping.
At this stage, Rashford is ‘open-minded’ about his future and is no rush over a new deal. Both Liverpool and Arsenal have been tipped to try and sign the winger in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old is currently trying to force his way back into the Three Lions squad. He was left out of the party for the friendly clashes with Switzerland and Ivory Coast this week.
Rashford hammered by critics
But his form has been disappointing this season, with just five goals in 26 games in all competitions. And Rashford was hammered by fans and critics alike for his listless display when coming on as a substitute in the Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid.
As for Shaw, the 26-year-old has had to split left-back duties with Alex Telles this term. However, it’s the Brazilian who’s started in recent weeks in some of the club’s biggest games of the season.
Shaw was in action for England at the weekend and scored a stunning equaliser in the victory over Switzerland.
But, like Rashford, he only has one year left on his contract. To that end, United want to act quickly to keep both players.
