Pundit urges West Ham to pip London rivals to England international

West Ham United should make a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer according to former England international Darren Bent.

There is a good chance Calvert-Lewin could be on the move, even if Everton stay up. Speculation is rife that the Toffees will cash in on one star player and the England international could go. If that is the case there will be a transfer scramble and Bent wants West Ham to swoop.

That would mean pipping Arsenal to his signature but Bent thinks it would be a wise move. It is well known that Hammers boss David Moyes wants a new striker in the summer. There is a chance he may want two after a disappointing January window.

Strikers in demand

The Gunners are also in the hunt for a new No.9 after losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January. Not only that Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah could also be on the move. Both are out of contract in the summer and the Gunners are keeping an eye on the market.

West Ham are also thought to be weighing up Lacazette as an option but Calvert-Lewin is a target. An approach was made in January but Everton slapped a £60m price-tag on him and West Ham backed away.

Speaking on Talksport Bent also dismissed such a valuation. “If Everton ask for £60million no one’s buying him for that,” he said.

When asked what is a fair valuation Bent felt more in the region of £35m to £40m.

Calvert-Lewin has shown his class in previous seasons but this campaign has been a tough one. The 25-year-old has struggled with injuries that have restricted him to just 10 games. He has scored only three goals and it is no coincidence Everton are struggling.

West Ham need a striker

It also means Everton cannot set an over-the-top price-tag. But if he can be picked up for a good price Bent thinks he would be a great signing for West Ham.

“I think for Calvert-Lewin, West Ham. They need another centre-forward, they cross the ball,” he told Talksport.

West Ham would face strong competition though as Arsenal are not the only interested club. Newcastle are in the hunt and are looking to spend big at the end of the season.

Tottenham have also been mentioned and would be an attractive option for the player. For now though Calvert-Lewin will be focused on playing and scoring goals. Everton need him in the battle to stay in the Premier League.
