Man Utd manager target facing crisis with players ‘split’ over potential appointment

The arrival of Erik ten Hag at Manchester United could cause fractures in the dressing room as a report claims players are ‘split’ over his potential appointment.

Links between ten Hag and the Red Devils have been hotting up in recent weeks. Paris Saint-Germain’s Mauricio Pochettino is still in the mix, but it is the Ajax boss who is frontrunner.

On Friday, reports revealed ten Hag wants to be involved in the club’s transfer policy, should his move go through.

A day later, Manchester United found out the potential cost in landing ten Hag. According to the Manchester Evening News, they will have to pay £1.7million to release him from his Ajax contract.

The MEN come back with another update, but it isn’t great news for the Dutchman. They claim the United players are ‘split’ over whether he would be a good appointment.

Some stars are happy with the prospect of working under ten Hag. After all, he was influential to the development of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt at Ajax, among others.

Erik ten Hag divides Man Utd opinion

However, other players see it as an ‘underwhelming’ arrival. This may cause problems in the first team if ten Hag does end up at Old Trafford over the summer.

The 52-year-old will have to deal with big names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane. ten Hag has never done this before, with most of his managerial experience coming in the Netherlands.

He would also have to get used to the Premier League, which can be a tough and unforgiving division to say the least.

While appearing on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, United legend Wayne Rooney backed Pochettino to take over, rather than ten Hag.

“I think Pochettino has done it in the Premier League,” the Derby manager said.

“He knows the Premier League and at Tottenham he brought a lot of players through. He did it at Southampton as well.

“If I’m choosing from one of the two, that’s who I’d choose. He would need to be given time to place his blueprint on the club and on the team. If you give him time, I think he’d do well.”
