Guardiola ‘approached’ over managing World Cup veterans, who are ‘very confident’ of Man City exit
The Brazilian Football Confederation reportedly hope to appoint Pep Guardiola as the nation’s new manager after the Qatar World Cup.
The Spaniard has made his name as one of the most successful managers in European club football. He initially rose to stardom at Barcelona in a historic four-year spell for the club.
Guardiola then moved to Bayern Munich and won three league titles among further major honours. As a result, he sought to stamp his mark on the Premier League and has proved just as successful.
Guardiola has won three league titles, the FA Cup and four Carabao Cups in his time at the Etihad Stadium. But despite his major domestic silverware, he has yet to step into international management.
According to Marca, though, Brazil want to give him his first taste of coaching a national team.
Current boss Tite is increasingly likely to leave after the World Cup in Qatar later this year. And the Brazilian FA have already approached Guardiola’s brother and agent, Pere, over a move.
Indeed, they want the Man City boss in on an initial four-year contract, taking him through to the 2026 World Cup.
The CBF stepped up plans to raid City for Guardiola after Ednaldo Rodrigues became the president in March.
And insiders at the Brazil national team feel ‘very confident’ of landing their top target, Marca adds.
Guardiola’s City contract runs out at the end of next season. Should he take the Brazil job, he would reportedly earn €12million (£10million) per year after tax.
That is a significant drop from the €20million (£16.6million) he earns in Manchester.
For now, though, Guardiola is focusing on creating more history at City.
Guardiola has more Man City history to make
He guided City to a treble in 2018/19, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
In that particular season, Guardiola edged Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp out by a point in the league title race.
The two sides are battling it out again for top spot this season and face off on Sunday in a huge match.
City are on course for another treble this season, with the Champions League the particular standout.
Europe’s premier competition is the only one he has not won in his latest job. Guardiola led the Cityzens to the final last season, where they lost to Chelsea, and the quarter-finals in 2020 and 2019.
