Jesse Marsch wants Leeds United to compete with European giants to land MLS star
Leeds United have highlighted US international Djordje Mihailovic as a target for the summer transfer window, according to reports.
Mihailovic is currently playing in the MLS for CF Montreal (formerly Montreal Impact), and has been in impressive form this season. In 2022, the attacking midfielder has scored four and assisted a further two more from eight league games. Now, the 23-year-old has attracted interest from across Europe, with Jesse Marsch particularly keen.
According to Il Resto del Carlino, Leeds are prepared to compete with Italian giants to secure Mihailovic’s signature.
The likes of Roma and Atalanta are both reportedly interested in Mihailovic. The youngster also traveled to Italy last November to be ‘reviewed’ by clubs.
Elsewhere in Europe, German outfits Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have also shown an interest.
However, it is Bologna that are currently favourites to land the star. The Italian side have somewhat of an advantage over other competitors, as they share an owner with Mihailovic’s current side.
This means that Bologna could have priority over other clubs if they pursue a deal in the summer.
However, Marsch will still be hoping the attractiveness of the Premier League may be enough to tempt Mihailovic.
Mihailovic’s current deal expires in 2023, but there is an option for that to be extended by a year if his club want to do so.
Former Spurs man offers Djordje Mihailovic verdict
Former Spurs and Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama plays alongside Mihailovic in the MLS.
The pair team up together at the heart of the Montreal midfield, and have helped their side gain a top-six spot after eight games in the Eastern Conference.
And Wanyama believes that his teammate is destined for bigger things in the future, tipping him to join the big leagues soon.
Speaking to the American press, Wanyama said: “To me, Djordje is a great player. We understand his movement, he’s a top talent.
“He’s on fire at the moment. I see him, if he continues like this, in bigger leagues to be honest. He won’t be here with us for long. So he’s playing well.
“He should continue being humble and giving us the performances he’s giving us at this stage.”
