Victor Orta flops with late charge as Leeds beaten to ideal £5m transfer

Norwich will win the race against Leeds United for the transfer of rarely-seen Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn, a report claims.

Both clubs have looked into the 25-year-old as an ideal signing to compliment their ranks between the sticks. While Tim Krul remains the Canaries’ undisputed No. 1, back-up star Orjan Nyland is leaving at the end of the month. Leeds are without a similar contractual situation, but instead reportedly want to offload Kiko Casilla.

Norwich have led the way for some time in the race to bring the Englishman into their ranks.

However, Leeds – led by sporting director Victor Orta – made a late charge to hijack the transfer.

According to the Daily Mirror, though, Norwich have fended off competition from Marcelo Bielsa’s club. As such, they will win the race and sign Gunn for £5million.

The stopper developed in Norwich’s youth ranks but made his name on a loan spell at the club from Manchester City in the 2017/18 season.

He appeared in all 46 matches, keeping 15 clean sheets, but Norwich did not earn promotion that year.

As a result of his displays, Southampton registered the greatest interest and snapped him up in 2018.

Gunn has only played 30 matches for the Saints, though, including only 10 Premier League matches. Despite a strong start to the 2019/20 season, he paid the price for the 9-0 defeat to Leicester at St. Mary’s.

Last season, meanwhile, he spent the campaign on loan at Stoke and played 15 times, but was hampered by an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Leeds‘ Casilla has proved a good servant for the club but has faced criticism – which Bielsa has batted off – for his rare displays of late. Furthermore, he faced a ban last season for a racism charge.

Leeds linked with Wolves transfer

Aside from a goalkeeper addition, Leeds have also been linked with a move for Wolves star Adama Traore.

Compared to the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns, the forward struggled to recreate such form last season.

Nevertheless, he made Spain’s Euro 2020 squad and reports claim that Leeds could swoop for him as a club-record transfer.
