Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has insisted there is surely no way for Manchester City’s current owners to continue in English football.

Man City have just been found guilty of the vast majority of the whopping 115 charges made against them relating to getting around the Premier League’s financial rules.

City have been owned by Sheikh Mansour and the Abu Dhabi United Group since 2008, and this has led to a highly dominant period for them following some big spending on world class players and elite managers, particularly Pep Guardiola.

However, this week’s news on City’s serious breaches casts all of that recent history into doubt, with Carragher insisting that this has to be the end for their current owners…

Jamie Carragher on Manchester City ownership

Speaking about the news on Sky Sports, Carragher said: “Well the club are going to get punished. I keep going back to … you’ve got players, you’ve got supporters, you’ve got the club, and you’ve got the owners. For me, this is all about the owners.

“Manchester City are a wonderful football club and have been for a hundred years … they’ll have the supporters who’ll always be there, they’ll have players who come and go.

“But in terms of what we’re finding out now, what we’re reading, what we’re hearing, I don’t know how the owners can continue in English football.

“We talk about a fit and proper test for owners, now they own Manchester City … what they’ve done over ten years now in the Premier League has left a stain that will be there for the next ten years about ‘did they win that really? Was that fair, was that legitimate?’.

“Every club is involved, people are going to be suing each other left, right, and centre. This all starts with Manchester City and it starts because they don’t like the word ‘no’.

“When the rules came in, it’s in the emails ‘we can do what we want’ … it actually beggars belief what you’re watching and what you’re hearing. I think it all boils down to, they have so much power, finances behind them, no one ever tells them no.

“Until they move away from the club, I don’t know how this stain is ever removed from the club. City will move on, they’ll have great teams in the future and they’ve had great teams in the past.

“It’s a fantastic football club, but I don’t see how the owners can continue after what’s happened here, and the way they’re actually reacting to it.”

He added: “I look at the ownership more than the actual club as such. These are the owners, City have had other owners before, they’ll have other owners in the future, but until these owners move on I think it will be very difficult for Manchester City to banish how they’re seen and thought of by the rest of the football world.”

What’s the right punishment for Manchester City?

For now, whatever kind of punishment MCFC get is just speculation, but it seems likely that we’re going to see something very strong.

The Premier League’s statement yesterday spoke several times of the ‘sham’ City have been involved in, and it’s sure to have infuriated a lot of high-up figures in English football and a number of different clubs.

Carragher is right that City’s owners surely can’t continue to be in control of any club in England, but there will also likely be lasting punishments beyond that for whatever form the club takes in the near future.

Huge fines, transfer bans, points deductions and expulsion from the Premier League surely all have to be on the table.
