‘A manager with silver spoon in his mouth’; Everton choice questioned as pundit rips Lampard apart
Former Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino has questioned whether Frank Lampard has the right credentials to become the next Everton manager.
The Toffees have been on the lookout for a new boss after parting company with Rafael Benitez earlier this month. The Spaniard was not the right fit for the Goodison Park outfit and paid the price for a woeful run of results. Many names have been mentioned as his possible successor.
The Merseysiders seemed to favour their former boss and current Belgium chief Roberto Martinez. The Belgium FA blocked Everton’s approach for the Spaniard, with Vitor Pereira then installed as favourite.
A fan backlash closed that door, with Derby County boss Wayne Rooney then thought to be ready for the challenge. The former Blues forward turned down the chance to move back to his old stamping ground.
And Lampard emerged as the preferred candidate on Friday. Multiple reports claimed he had been offered the job. There has been no further update.
Lampard cut his management teeth with Derby. He was sacked as Chelsea manager in January last year. And Cascarino feels the ex-England star was lucky to land the Stamford Bridge role.
“What manager in the Championship coming sixth would get the Chelsea job? Absolutely nobody, he told talkSPORT. “He’s been given it because he is a legend at Chelsea, rightly so, under difficult circumstances with the embargo and having to nurture a [young] team.
“But when he left, I think they were ninth in the table, and this not a very nice line to use but I’ll say it because I thought about it, and thought, he’s the manager with a silver spoon in his mouth, because a lot has happened for Frank because of how good he was as a player.”
Lampard still with much to prove
There is no questioning Lampard’s qualities as a footballer. But history is littered with examples of top-class players who failed to cut the mustard as managers.
Lampard still has plenty of time to buck that particular trend. But Cascarino does not believe the 43-year-old has done enough to warrant being considered for top jobs.
“He hasn’t earned his stripes as in what he’s achieved to be Chelsea manager or Everton manager – they were circumstances,” he continued.
“One of them at Chelsea, being a legend at the football club, and this isn’t anything like sticking pins in Frank. This is just factual stuff, this is what I’m coming from.”
