Arsenal legend explains why PSG superstar to Newcastle could ‘easily happen’
Newcastle United’s quest to become one of the Premier League’s big-hitters has been aided after an Arsenal legend told them he can see them signing PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.
The brilliant France striker remains in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain after a speculation-filled summer. With his contract winding down, the 22-year-old appeared likely to quit the Parc de Princes. Indeed, he even admitted that Real Madrid would have been his destination of choice.
However, despite making a huge offer for his services, PSG rejected Real’s approach and Mbappe eventually stayed.
“If I had left this summer it would only have been to join Real Madrid,” Mbappe said in an interview with RMC in October.
“PSG decided not to sell me and I was OK with that decision.
“I kept playing in August and I didn’t have a problem with that, I’m still playing for a great team in a place where I was and I still am happy.
“Why did I want to go? I thought my adventure there was over, I wanted to discover a new thing.”
Speculation continues to swirl over his future though, with Real likely to try and sign him on a free next summer.
That’s despite reports claiming he’s unconvinced by recently-appointed Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti.
As such, former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit reckons he can easily see Mbappe signing for Newcastle.
Thanks to their stupidly-rich new Saudi owners, Newcastle now have the finances to bring in the world’s top stars.
And in quotes carried by The Sun, Petit has revealed why he can see the deal going through.
Kylian Mbappe future undecided
“Anything can happen. We see what’s happening with Newcastle United – there have been rumours and you never know what’s going to happen at the end of the day. Things can turn very easily and very quickly.
“There is a big link with Real Madrid and I know that in his mind when he was a child he was dreaming of playing for clubs like this, because of the stars they have there and the history of the club.
“I think he’s been frustrated and tired by the situation at PSG over the past year. We’ve seen some trouble on the pitch between players both at Paris Saint-Germain and the national team, which was reflective in his game and his mood.
“Maybe he’s interested in Real Madrid because he’s tired of what’s happening here in France.
“I think he gets the feeling sometimes that he doesn’t get the same recognition as players like [Lionel] Messi or Neymar.
“Messi, before he came here, he was the king of Barcelona. But for me, the king of Paris Saint-Germain is Mbappe, not Messi or Neymar.
“With all the respect I have for Messi, Mbappe is still number one.”
Kylian Mbappe saying little on Pochettino
Indeed, PSG will likely find themselves without the services of both Mbappe and manager Mauricio Pochettino come the summer.
The PSG boss continues to be linked with Manchester United; even dropping this strong, cryptic hint on his future.
Mbappe has also recently been asked about Pochettino’s style of play – and the PSG superstar wasn’t exactly given his boss a ringing endorsement.
“I think we have periods of good quality in which we’ve shown how good we are,” he said.
“I will say, though, that it hasn’t been enough with the team that we’ve got, but we try to improve every day. We’re improving.
“I respect people’s opinions. Everyone has a right to an opinion. People think we play badly.
“I personally don’t think we’re playing well at the moment, but we’re winning.
“I think we’ll keep working because we have a hard-working group.”
But Mbappe refused to give coach under-pressure coach Mauricio Pochettino a vote of confidence.
“I’m not the person who should be talking about that and whether there’s time or not,” Mbappe said.
“It’s the president, Leonardo and the directors who need to say that.”
