Arsenal revive pursuit of bargain midfielder in rival crosshairs as transfer decision confirmed
Arsenal appear to be back in the running to sign Denis Zakaria after Borussia Monchengladbach confirmed he would be leaving them.
Zakaria is out of contract with Gladbach at the end of the season. Due to his situation, he has become a target for many clubs across Europe. Earlier this month, it was suggested that a move to Liverpool was looking likely.
However, they are far from his only suitors. Newcastle were later linked, while there has been talk of interest from Arsenal in the past.
It seems Zakaria is still on the Gunners’ radar. According to Fussball Transfers, Arsenal are one of the clubs to have expressed an interest in the Switzerland international.
Strengthening in midfield will be important for Mikel Arteta’s side in 2022. In January, they will be without Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey due to the African Cup of Nations.
Furthermore, Ainsley Maitland-Niles seems intent on leaving the club again. A loan move to Roma is in the pipeline for the versatile academy graduate.
Arsenal will need to reinforce the position further after already adding Albert Sambi Lokonga in the summer. Zakaria is someone they remain fond of and now they have a good chance to get him.
Borussia released a statement on Wednesday, updating what the future holds for their out-of-contract players. In Zakaria’s case, it is now public knowledge that he will be leaving the Bundesliga side.
Fussball Transfers have subsequently compiled his potential suitors. Their information suggests Arsenal are in contention to take the 25-year-old.
Arsenal face strong Zakaria competition
However, they also add that both Manchester United and Manchester City would be interested too.
Man Utd are looking to strengthen their midfield as Paul Pogba approaches the end of his own contract. There were reports of their interest in Zakaria last month.
City, meanwhile, are always looking to evolve a fundamental area of their successful side.
Alternatively, in the Bundesliga, Zakaria has admirers at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Further afield, he is on the radars of Juventus, Inter Milan, Roma and Barcelona.
Sport Bild have speculated that Gladbach could sell Zakaria for €7m in the January transfer window. Alternatively, he could see out his contract before leaving as a free agent.
Either way, Zakaria will no longer be a Gladbach player beyond the end of the season. Arsenal will hope to benefit from his desire for a change, but face tough competition.
