Barcelona medical scheduled as reasons emerge why Adama Traore snubbed Tottenham

Adama Traore will have a medical at Barcelona on Friday after the Wolves man reportedly pulled the plug on a move to Tottenham.

Spurs had been named as suitors for Traore after it transpired the speedy left-footer would not sign a new deal at Molineux. The Spaniard’s contract expires next summer and Wolves are keen not to lose the 26-year-old for free.

Antonio Conte’s men emerged as the most credible contender to land Traore this week. The BBC confirmed they had lodged a £15m offer, though Wolves were believed to be holding out for closer to £20m.
But a hold up in the deal allowed Barcelona to enter talks with agent Jorge Mendes over a loan move with an obligation to buy in the summer.

That obligation was understood to be around the €22m mark. But David Ornstein has now revealed the optional deal will be worth around €30m to €35m.

Traore’s proposed move to Tottenham now looks over with Barca ready to sew up a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer. It will mean a return to Barcelona for Traore, who left the Camp Nou for Aston Villa in 2015.

The former Middlesbrough man is believed to be open to the idea of returning to Barcelona.

Traore opposed to wing-back role

Meanwhile, the hold up in Traore’s switch south to the capital is believed to have revolved around Conte’s desire to turn Traore into a wing back.

Talks between the two clubs were progressing.  But Traore is understood to have halted proceedings after being “unsure about the prospect of playing right wing-back”.

Emerson Royal has struggled to adapt thus far, while Matt Doherty remains on the periphery of Conte’s plans.

Traore had played wing-back on occasions under Nuno Espirito Santo at Molineux, but his preference is as an attacking player.

Traore has made 10 starts for Wolves this season in a variety of positions across the forward line.

He has been on the bench for Wolves’ last five league games. He lost his place after the narrow defeat to Man City.

The winger did net in the recent win over Southampton. He also had a goal against Brentford chalked off last time out for offside.
