Battle on as West Ham rival Leeds United in transfer for deadly striker
West Ham are the latest side to register apparent interest in Ben Brereton Diaz, rivalling Leeds United in the battle to sign the Blackburn star.
Leeds initially established themselves as the most likely suitors for the Chilean. Indeed, their interest has been well reported of late, given injuries to much of their forward line.
The signing of a such a prolific goalscorer would be key for the Whites. Indeed, injuries, coupled with a string of poor results, has left them teetering above the relegation zone.
However, their pursuit may become a tough one, as West Ham are reported to be interested. That is according to journalist Alex Crook, via talkSPORT.
“We understand he is attracting interest from the likes of Leeds and West Ham in the Premier League,” he said.
The Hammers interest in the prolific forward is for a much different reason than Leeds’. West Ham have sat in the top four for much of the season, and have scored the fourth highest goals tally in the Premier League.
Despite that, Michail Antonio, who started the season in fine form, has dropped off of late. What’s more, he has failed to score for West Ham since late October.
Indeed, signing a striker in competition with Antonio seems a smart move by West Ham. It should not only kick Antonio into gear, but will allow the Hammers another option should his slump continue.
Brereton Diaz seems ready to make the step up to the top-flight of English football. Indeed, he has scored 17 goals in 22 games this season in the Championship.
A fee of around £20million should be enough for Blackburn to let go of their prized asset. As such, a battle could ensue between West Ham and Leeds, with the Hammers looking the overwhelming favourites, given their league position.
Brereton Diaz on Hammers striker shortlist
Despite West Ham’s interest in Brereton Diaz, they have also been linked with an MLS star. Valentin Castellanos was the joint-top scorer in the MLS this season.
What’s more, he has drawn praise from one of the world’s best managers, Pep Guardiola.
“What I’ve seen, and when the scouting department talk to me, I think he is a quality player ready to make the next step. We will see where,” Guardiola said.
Indeed, after his 19-goal season, Castellanos looks ready to take on the next step in his career.
As such, West Ham could land a top striker, whichever option they decide to go for.
