Bayern threatening Man Utd transfer plan, but key limitation could aid Old Trafford move
Bayern Munich had a key figure monitoring Man Utd transfer target Ryan Gravenberch on Tuesday night, though a trusted source has explained why a move to Bavaria is difficult.
The Athletic recently claimed Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is a transfer target for Manchester United this summer. The midfielder, 19, has been tipped to hit the heights and his former coach has claimed he’s already better than Paul Pogba in multiple areas.
Gravenberch’s former coach, Brian Tevreden, previously told Goal:“Technically, I would say [Gravenberch is] a better version of Pogba in his best days at Juventus, in terms of his technique and his presence on the pitch.
“He’s very dominant like Pogba was, and that’s what I see in Ryan.”
At 19, the central midfielder is already dominating midfield battles in the Eredivisie. His form has been of such a high standard that he already has 10 senior Netherlands caps to his name.
What’s more, midfield is an area United are expected to address in the summer.
Indeed, Paul Pogba is due to leave as a free agent, while Nemanja Matic’s best days are behind him at 33.
Fred has impressed in recent weeks. Though there are still doubts as to whether he and Scott McTominay are of the calibre United require to challenge Man City and Liverpool.
As such, the Athletic put United in the frame to sign Gravenberch this summer, and that pursuit would be greatly aided if Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag becomes their next permanent manager. According to the Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag is the new favourite to take the reins.
Bayern want Gravenberch, but money is tight
However, acquiring Gravenberch won’t be entirely smooth sailing. That’s because Bayern Munich are also in the mix, and per Fabrizio Romano, were scouting the Dutchman on Tuesday night.
The reliable journalist tweeted ‘Bayern director Hasan Salihamidžić was in Amsterdam’ on Tuesday during Ajax’s Champions League clash with Benfica. On his agenda was keeping a close eye on Gravenberch.
However, Bayern’s summer pursuit does have one key limitation. Romano added the Bavarians are only prepared to fork out €25m (£21m) for his signature. That sum could easily be beaten by United – if they so desire.
Romano provided further hope to those wishing to see Gravenberch at Old Trafford. He claimed Bayern’s interest has not led to a concrete offer as yet. As such, he concluded the race is ‘still open’.
