Bruno Lage notes problem making Wolves ‘suffer’ after ‘better team’ claim against Arsenal

Bruno Lage believed Wolves were the better side against Arsenal despite their defeat, raising questions about two “strange decisions” despite the focus being elsewhere.

Wolves were beaten by a single Gabriel Magalhaes goal despite having more possession and shots than Arsenal. They even finished the match with more players on the pitch than their opponents after an unusual red card for Gabriel Martinelli.

The Arsenal striker got two yellow cards in the same passage of play after an advantage was originally given. It appeared to be the correct call but has still prompted debate among pundits away from the pitch.

On it, Wolves could not make the most of their numerical advantage. They created several chances but could not convert them.

It has left manager Bruno Lage disappointed – especially since they did have the ball in the net once only for it to be ruled out. Furthermore, he felt there was a foul on their goalkeeper when Arsenal scored.

He said (via the BBC): “I’m disappointed because I thought we were the better team. Our tempo was very good and we managed the game well but we didn’t score our chances and we suffered from a set piece.

“I think there were two strange decisions, especially for our ‘goal’. But we continue to work.

“I saw the Arsenal goal and the striker kicked Jose Sa’s hand. It’s clear, so clear. When you look at the image it’s a strange decision.

“We did a good game and created chances but we are not scoring goals at the moment and we suffer because of that.”

Ruben Neves echoes Bruno Lage analysis

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves had a very similar view of proceedings to his manager.

Neves also pointed out their problems with scoring despite claiming his side are at a high level.

The Portugal international said: “We did well but we are struggling to score goals and conceding a lot on set-pieces.

“With their goal there is some doubt about whether it was a foul or not but that’s football. We are used to these decisions.

“We need to improve a lot on scoring goals because we are creating chances but we’re not good enough in that part of the game.

“I can accept the decision about their goal but in some games they give it and in some games they don’t. They need to do the same decisions in every game because it’s frustrating for us.

“We saw the way they celebrated the win and that shows the level we are. I didn’t see Arsenal celebrating like this in the past 10 years – it was like they won the league.”
