Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have reportedly won the race to sign a fringe Manchester City attacker in a bargain deal this summer.

Het Nieuwsblad states that Leipzig have struck a deal for Lukas Nmecha, who impressed while on loan at Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht last season. The transfer is rumoured to be worth around £8.5million for the talented 21-year-old attacker.

Nmecha struggled in previous spells at Preston, Middlesbrough and Wolfsburg. But the Germany Under-21 international notched 21 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions in Belgium last term.

While Anderlecht were keen to keep the player, it appears that Leipzig have jumped the gun and won the race.

The fee of £8.5m represents the fact that Nmecha is about to enter the final 12 months of his City contract.

The fact that Pep Guardiola is allowing another forward to move on does hint at a new arrival.

Prolific Tottenham and England marksman Harry Kane is City’s top target. However, latest reports suggest that may not happen until next summer, when the player would come cheaper.

That leaves City with Gabriel Jesus as their main forward option, plus plenty of players that can play as a ‘false nine’.

Carragher shocked by Sterling swap talk

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher says that he cannot believe reports suggesting Raheem Sterling could move to Tottenham as part of Harry Kane’s transfer to Manchester City.

Kane’s future could prove the biggest story of the summer transfer window, whichever way he goes. If he leaves, the England captain will likely do so for a British record fee. However, if he stays at Spurs, debate will ensure over whether he made the right decision amid his club’s long-term lack of silverware.

The fee for Kane’s transfer will prove the biggest talking point; reports claim that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy wants £150million for the 27-year-old.

Manchester City have emerged as potential candidates to snap Kane up.

However, while recently making a £100million bid, they noted the “availability to include players in the deal”.

Winger Sterling emerged as one of five players who City could reportedly include in such a deal. Writing in his Telegraph column, though, Carragher took aim at those reports.

He wrote: “I can’t believe I have read some reports suggesting he could be a makeweight in a deal to take Kane to City.

“With respect, do people think Sterling is at a point in his career where he would join Spurs? Are they serious?

“If he was available, top Champions League clubs would be queuing up for him.”
